#1 Starting Out traces Jeff’s career path attending Kent State University in Architecture and Design during the late ’60s, including the 1970 Kent State Killings. He reflects on how the immediate loss of a safe common ground on campus translated into an understanding that architectural spaces profoundly affect our sense of personal well-being and the capacity to fully participate within our community. He describes professional mentors who supported his growth while in the honors program and encouraged his insightful perception, specifically while studying the psychological and social effects of color and light. With today’s resurgence in LSD research reshaping our current understanding of self, others, and social/ physical spaces, Jeff speaks to his brief interaction while attending Architecture School with respected researchers that influenced his understanding of the psycho-spiritual possibilities of space and form.
